This special issue of Mineralogical Magazine contains short papers written by participants in the Eighth International Symposium on the Geochemistry of the Earths Surface (GES8) (Natural History Museum, London, 18–22 August, 2008). The meeting has been organized by the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the International Association of Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry (IAGC) working group on the Geochemistry of the Earths Surface, and the Natural History Museum, London. Additional funding was supplied by the European Association for Geochemistry, Diamond Light Source Ltd., and the following special interest groups of the Mineralogical Society: Environmental Mineralogy, Applied Mineralogy, Geochemistry, and Mineral Physics.
