Writing a review of a volume in the famous Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry series is a pleasant task because one can learn much about key topics in the Earth sciences. I was not disappointed by this volume. I particularly enjoyed the variety of spatial scales it encompasses, starting from the fine details of hydrogen incorporation sites in minerals to the role of water in global geodynamics and its relationships with the early history of Earth. In addition, the chapters are readily accessible and clearly written providing the reader with the basic knowledge required to progress in this field.
