Photoatlas Volume 2 is an eagerly awaited, updated and expanded version of Photoatlas Volume 1, published in 1986. This is a massive work in more ways than one. It is lavishly illustrated with superb photomicrographs on high quality gloss paper extending over some 829 pages. The pay-back is the sheer weight of the tome (~3 kg). A stronger book spine would have alleviated my concern that the book may not be able to withstand the constant use at the microscope workbench where its rightful place should be.
Volume 2 is organized into four main sections illustrating the nature, origin, gemmological significance and beauty of inclusions in gem materials.
Section I (27 pp.), provides a general Introduction to the purpose and structure of the Photoatlas, together with classifications and definitions of the range of inclusions present in gem materials.
