For many people, volcanoes are often first connected with the elegant profile of Vesuvius, the ‘Lighthouse of the Mediterranean’ at Stromboli, or active lava fields on the slopes of Mount Etna, one of the reasons Italy is deservedly known as the ‘Cradle of volcanology’. Indeed, for those lucky enough to have a hands-on volcano-logical experience the chances are that they will include one of these sites.
