For many people, volcanoes are often first connected with the elegant profile of Vesuvius, the ‘Lighthouse of the Mediterranean’ at Stromboli, or active lava fields on the slopes of Mount Etna, one of the reasons Italy is deservedly known as the ‘Cradle of volcanology’. Indeed, for those lucky enough to have a hands-on volcano-logical experience the chances are that they will include one of these sites. The advent of geo-tourism, coupled with budget flights to areas which were previously difficult to access, has led to an increase in the demand for clear introductions for those wanting to experience these sites.
