I should confess that I am suspicious of edited volumes, for a number of reasons. But then volumes like this come along and make the counter-argument, that there is an important role for the well-targeted edited volume. One measure of the likely quality of an edited volume is the nature of the introduction, almost invariably written by the volume editors. Often these introductions consist of an introductory paragraph or two followed by a few sentences on each of the papers. Such volumes typically consist of papers that, if they are good could have been published in the standard peer-reviewed literature, and if not should not have been published.
