This catalogue on Africas alkaline rocks and carbonatites is timely as they are currently the focus of considerable research both for their economic potential and their key to the geochemistry of the Earths mantle. This is the third volume of the series dealing with these rocks. Part 1 (1987) dealt with North and South America, and Part 2 (1995) with the former USSR. Part 4 will conclude the series and cover Australasia, Antarctica, the oceanic islands and the rest of Asia and Europe.
Alkaline rocks are taken to be those with modal feldspathoid, analcime and/or alkali pyroxene and amphibole. They include the feldspathoidal, syenitic, trachytic, peralkaline silicic and some alkali basic rocks, mostly igneous with some migmatitic and gneissose. Included are the mineralogically fascinating kamafugitic rocks that are so well developed in Uganda.
Part 3 follows the same presentation of data as in Parts 1 and 2. Each country is taken in alphabetical order and, working from north to south across a map of each country, each locality is numbered and listed. In the . . . [Full Text of this Article]
