This book comprises fifteen chapters of rather disparate aspect. The first two concentrate on British battlefields and castles from mediaeval times to the Civil War but, whilst including interesting vignettes of individual fortification sites and engagements and modern understanding of their geology, they nevertheless fail to demonstrate any real appreciation by the ancient generals and fort-builders of anything more than the importance of the topography, particularly in occupying the high ground.
