This is the latest volume in a series intended to replace Danas System of Mineralogy as the standard descriptive reference series on minerals, to follow Vol. 1, Elements, Sulfides, Sulfosalts(1990), Vol. 2, Silica and Silicates in two books (1995) and Vol. 3, Halides, Hydroxides, Oxides(1997). Vol. 5, to follow, is projected to cover principally borates, carbonates and sulfates.
The book covers 680 species on the 680 pages, with a database, or rather card index type of format one species, one page. The reviewer is not convinced that he likes this format, which is easy to use for most purposes, but is fundamentally restrictive, particularly on data for well-studied species, such as apatite, for example.
